Q: What is home modification?

A: Home modification refers to converting or adapting your environment in order to make performing tasks easier, reduce accidents, and support independent living. Home modification, ranging from low-cost to more expensive adaptations, includes removing hazards (e.g., clutter, throw rugs), adding special features or assistive devices (e.g., grab bars, ramps), moving furnishings, changing where activities occur (e.g., sleeping on the first instead of second floor) and renovations (e.g., installing a roll-in shower).

Q: Why is home modification important?

A: Home modifications provide many benefits: 1) Quality of Life: Modifications can allow you to more easily engage in major life activities or even minor tasks. The environment has a profound impact on behavior and a supportive environment can contribute to or hinder your individual health. Dr. Laura Gitlin and her team at Thomas Jefferson University conducted a landmark study that found that a personalized program of occupational and physical therapy – plus modifications in the home – can help elderly individuals continue to live independently and also live longer. 2) Home Safety: Six out of 10 falls occur in the home. Home modification is one of the key factors to a multifactor approach to fall risk reduction. When home modifications are combined with a medical risk assessment and follow-up, as well as physical activity, fall risks can be greatly decreased. 2006 study by the Centers for Disease Control reported that falls are the leading cause of injury deaths by older adults. Falls result in emotional and physical stress as well as costs to the individual and society. Six out of 10 falls occur in homes which typically contain a high prevalence of hazards such as loose throw rugs, the lack of tub/shower grab bars, and obstructed pathways. Home modifications can reduce the demands of the environment while making the home safer and more supportive.

Q: Who needs home modifications?

A: There are five general groups of people who can benefit from adapting their environment. These include:

  • Older adults who want to age in place;
  • Families who have children with disabilities;
  • Adults with disabilities;
  • Baby Boomers planning for the future; and
  • People of all ages.

Q: What is a Home Assessment?

A: A ‘home assessment’ is an evaluation of you or your love ones ability to function in the home environment. Basically, we are looking at two broad categories of measurement: 1) the environment; and 2) the person’s performance.We determine specific home modification needs and examine how you function within your environment. A mismatch between the environment and a person with declining ability makes it more difficult to carry out daily life activities and increases the risk of accidents such as falls. Adjusting the environment to fit your abilities can improve your ability to function in the environment and increase your safety in your living space. The Safe in Your Space goal with our assessment is to improve your quality of life and to make your home safer.Our comprehensive assessment involves the client, recognizes individual differences, and is sensitive to your particular needs and will help identify home modifications that are most useful and fitting for you. The assessment about your environment is most useful when it considers how you or people in the home interact in your home environment.
Q: Whose products do you sell?
